The next level of self-scanning: Instant payment using NFC

The popularity of self-scanning is steadily increasing, and with that comes more features making the shopping experience even better for the shoppers. One of the latest features, available with the new Zebra PS30 self-scanning device, is the ability to pay directly through NFC. No external payment tower or checkout area is needed – everything is done directly using the PS30 device and your bank card. Learn more about the feature here!

The possibility to use tap-to-pay directly in the self-scanning device brings benefits for both retailers and shoppers.

Retail technology is continuously developing, and a lot has happened with self-scanning during the last decade, evolving from limited and bulky devices with monochrome screens to high-tech gadgets with an ever-expanding array of features. For self-scanning, a lot of the development has been conducted with the end-user experience in mind. New smart features are a great way to enhance the shopping experience, while minimizing friction simultaneously.

A natural next step is thereby to make the payment moment even easier. As for now, when self-scanning is done it is either by using a smartphone or a dedicated self-scanning device. When using the smartphone, payment is often processed within the self-scanning app, offering a fast and convenient way for consumers to pay instantly before leaving the store. For self-scanning devices however, shoppers are usually required to visit a designated area where payment towers are installed. By using these payment towers, shoppers can pay for their items and thereafter leave the store. While not being a major time-consuming step - it is certainly faster than queueing and paying at the traditional checkout - it can be improved even more.

By incorporating a payment feature in the new Zebra PS30 device, it has become possible for shoppers to pay directly using their cards. When the shopping trip with the self-scanning device has been completed, the shopper can use a bank card directly in the device interface. By tapping the bank card (smartphone wallet can also be used) at the top of the screen, payment will be processed – without the need for any additional steps.

“It is great to see that the self-scanning experience is continuously improving – this is a win-win situation for both retailers and their shoppers. By being able to pay directly in the self-scanning device, retailers will free up more store space, and shoppers will have an even smoother shopping experience”, says Fredrik Englund, Managing Director at Datema Retail.

Some frequently asked questions related to NFC payment combined with self-scanning:

  • For shoppers, they get an easier experience as they do not have to visit any payment tower or other external setup for payment. This minimizes friction and saves time.

For retailers, additional store space will be available, as the designated payment area can be reduced further. This is especially helpful for smaller stores where space is limited.

  • These two options actually complement each other! There are times where a dedicated self-scanning device is the preferred option. Learn more about it here.

  • If the bank card – virtual or physical – has support for NFC pay it can be used. Some banks require the card holders to approve tap-to-pay usage before their first purchase.

  • No, as the hardware needs to have support for NFC, there are only a few devices on the market that can handle this type of solution. The Zebra PS30 is one if them.

  • The possibility to pay directly by using PS30 also depends on the self-scanning software, and the POS setup. Do not hesitate to reach out, in case you want to know more about this.

  • Yes, the possibility to pay in the self-scanning device is only an added feature, not a must.

How to get started with tap-to-pay for self-scanning devices?

How can retailers realize their wish to offer tap-to-pay directly in the self-scanning device? As mentioned before, not all hardware supports this solution – make sure to invest in hardware that will last! The PS30 from Zebra Technologies is an excellent choice for those retailers wanting to future-proof their self-scanning offering. Read more about the PS30 here.

For the software and POS solution, Datema Retail’s EasyShop self-scanning software is a well-known and appreciated solution for those who wants to offer an easy and convenient self-scanning experience. As of June 2024 Datema Retail has also entered a strategic partnership with 2iZii – a company specialized in digital mobile solutions such as digital payments. Together they can offer a holistic tap-to-pay self-scanning experience. Learn more about the partnership here.
